To avoid too many differing opinions, sometimes a bride chooses to only bring her mom (or maid of honor) with her — and that’s totally okay. But doing so can hurt the feelings of your bridesmaids and other friends. Here’s how to navigate this tricky situation.

Everyone is excited about your wedding and those close to you (like your bridesmaids and future in-laws) just want to be a part of every important moment. If you want to keep the shopping experience private, by all means, do it. Don’t feel obligated to take a lot of people. Let your them know ahead of time that you’re going dress shopping with your mom. You can say things like, “I want the dress to be a surprise!” or “It has just always been a childhood dream of mine to just go with my mom.” They will understand.

Once you choose the dress, though, include your bridal party and future mother-in-law so they don’t feel left out of the entire process. Schedule another appointment to go into the salon and try on the gown and invite them. Although they didn’t go dress shopping with you, let them know they are the few people who are invited to see the gown before the big day! They will surely appreciate the gesture.
